To move or not to move: California?

I'm 28 years old and was laid off by Verizon Wireless a short while back. I've always wanted to visit the West Coast and see what all the hype is about. Im currently in PA. I have a military background and have given thought to joining the police force out there, once i've settled, which there would appear to be plenty openings. To top it all off I recently met a young lady that resides there and things are steadily progressing :) So, should I chance it?
