How does color imagery help a reader gain a deeper understanding of a character in a book?

Certain colors are ociated with certain feelings or moods. Red can be angry or spirited, blue can be cool or depressed, green can be full of life or sickly. If a color is used to describe a character in a certain situation, it could show how he responds to things, what his true feelings are, is he ugly or good on the inside.
