Can you get jail time for a second criminal offence but on a different ciminal charge as the first?

my freind got a drinkin a driving charge about 2 years ago wich he was soon going to get a pardon for, and now he has a charge for theft under 1000 if he gets convicted will he get jail time? this is for offences in canada toronto btw..
