Hawthorne's attitude towards puritanism?

I haven't read the book in years. I absolutely HATED that book which is odd because I actually love literature. But Hawthorne made many of the characters hypocritical. I believe one of the priests that was condemning the adulterer was having an affair or whatever. So something like that.
