What does this poem by billy collins mean?

The poet ( teacher) challenges the students to write or read something which truly reflects their life. The teacher hopes they have completed their ignment and can share their poetry. There is a cynicism here...yet the teacher, though slightly defeated, is still hopeful someone will deliver a poem of substance!
