If our atmosphere filled with dust and little to no light got through, how long until the dust came back down?

What I am supposing is if Earth was hit by an asteroid and the sun was blocked out by debris collecting in our atmosphere, how long would it take for the debris to dissipate, return to some level of normalcy?
